Japan is home to countless Bonsai nurseries, many of which have been passed down through generations for hundreds of years. It’s no surprise that Japanese Bonsai are widely regarded as the finest in the world. Among the most commonly used species in Japan are Pines, Junipers, and Maples. In this top 10 list, we highlight some of the most stunning and iconic Japanese Bonsai trees.

The Hiroshima Survivor
This extraordinary Bonsai has been carefully cultivated for nearly 400 years by six generations of the Yamaki family. What makes it truly remarkable is its history—it was located in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945. Despite the devastation, the tree survived. It was later gifted to the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington, D.C.

An 800 Year Old Bonsai in Tokyo
This impressive Bonsai is famous for its incredible age, estimated to be over 800 years old. It belongs to Kunio Kobayashi, one of the world’s most respected Bonsai masters, who has received Japan’s prestigious Prime Minister’s Award four times.

Elegant Pine by Shinji Suzuki
